I change my sewing machine needle, I do. Maybe not quite as often as I should, but I'm trying to be cognizant about a rough needle making for rough sewing. My main downfall is what needle to go with what fabric? There are so many needles and so many fabrics...who can I keep track of which goes with what? Well, as Apple so eloquently put it, there is an app for that. Yes! Schmetz, the needle connoisseurs, have built an app to help us with our needle questions. So next time you are buying some notions and aren't sure what you need, you see all the different types of needles available for your projects. Needle Type Page Once you know your fabric choice you can reference what needle works best with what fabric...just select a fabric type and a needle will be suggested. Fabric Reference-1 It does really help when you have the right needle for the right fabric. And don't underestimate the importance of changing your needles, it can make a big difference in your sewing. Here are a few clues to tell you when it's time to change:

Broken or Shredded Threads

Skipped or Uneven stitches

Puckered or Damaged Fabrics

Popping Sound made by Sewing Machine

81RPts9Br3L._SL1500_ We are all so excited about this new app that Schmetz has generously donated two gift tins containing some goodies to give away (needle type and thread color may vary)! Leave a comment below, and we will randomly draw TWO winners. And don't forget to download the Schmetz app here! Comments will close Sunday, August 4th at midnight & two winners will be selected & announced Monday, August 5th here on the IJ blog!! **Note! The Schmetz app for Android is coming soon!

Olivia Kuebler on

A way to end the mystery; at last. I know needles are important so this is a wonderful idea. Thanks.

Gloria Heitman on

I love the Schmetz needles—my favorites are Microtex 80 and Microtex 90. As the new thicker threads have come out for quilting, I use the Topstitch 90 needles for some of my machine quilting. They “plant” the stitches so well.

Barbara Scofield on

Schmetz makes the best needles. I really like titanium needles and the gold needles. I use size 75/11 for most of my projects and occasionally use 90/14 needles for a few projects. I have looked to Indygo Junction for sewing inspiration for many years.

Sandra Timmons on

What a wonderful gift to win and to receive. Needles are a necessary notion and we do not chance them often enough. This is a very thoughtful and useful idea. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to win.

I love the hints on when to change a needle. I just had the popping sound from my sewing machine and sure enough it was the needle. I changed it out and all was quiet when I started sewing again.

Talk about timing…..Two nights ago, I was sewing and was about to toss my computer sewing machine out the window (luckily, I could not lift it) because the thread kept shredding and jamming the bobbin area. It happened 6, 7 times. I kept cleaning the bobbin area, thinking I missed a piece of thread. After the 7th time of thread shredding, it dawned on me to change the needle. Well, lo and behold, that is all I needed to do. I could have saved myself a lot of time if I had just changed the needle after the thread shredded the second time. Quick fix and I could have saved myself a lot of frustration. I have sewn for a lot of years and I only buy Schmetz needles, they are quality in a small package. Believe me, I am going to print out this list of suggested fixes and tape it next to my machine. Thank you!

Deborah Dunnell on

I have the schmetz app. Love these needles. A hint just given to me by a quilt shop owner. Change needle every 3rd bobbin.

Diane Martin on

This is the only brand of needles I ever buy or use – the best. They make sewing easier no matter what the fabric or project.

Diane LeGore on

I have been using Schmetz needles for many years. They are the best. It is wonderful that they now have an app to choose the right needle for the project. Thanks!

Sandy Madon on

Schmetz needles are great! Quality needles mean quality sewing.

Eleanor on

Nan on

What a great idea! We all need help with the right needle to use depending on our project. Way to go, Schmetz! Thank you.

Meryl Turner on

Schmetz needles are my go to needles for embroidery, quilting or just sewing. This app is a great idea. But of course, it’s from Schmetz!

Judi Reiss on

The app is such a great idea. So often I think I know the correct needle, but after starting, I realize I need something different. This will make it a lot easier for me to get ot right the first time! I prefer Schmetz needles. Maybe because I have been using them for over 50 years!

Dedee Duckham on

I have been using Schmetz needles since I started quilting! I love them! If a needle has every broken, it has been my fault! (stitching through very thinck fabic at high speed, or pulling the fabric! shame on me! LOL) Schmetz needles are so durable & dependable! NO wonder we forget to change them as often as we should! I love this tin! How handy that will be! Thank you for a great, dependable, high quality needle!

sherelyn nichol on

WOW I am going to love this app because I fail at knowing which needles to use. And it shows in my work! Thanks for the information!

Sara Rhodes on

Just realized what a difference the right needle can make to your project. Schmetz is my favorite brand.
