Thanks to our friends at Sew Mama Sew for joining the Vintage Made Modern blog tour! Read their post below and then head over to their site, where they are giving away a copy of Vintage Notions!
We love the versatility of Indygo Junction patterns, and designer and author Amy Barickman's solid, thriving Indygo Junction business. We featured The Adelaide Tank from The Magic Pattern Book: Sew 6 Patterns into 36 Different Styles! and the pretty Tea Towel Embroidery Project too from Indygo Junction's Stitched Style, both by Amy. With our appreciation for all things Amy already established we knew we'd love her newest fabric collection, Vintage Made Modern Centennial Celebration. Amy has a free Summer Purse pattern excerpt from her Vintage Notions: An Inspirational Guide to Needlework, Cooking, Sewing, Fashion and Fun, created in her latest fabrics. The book highlights inspirational monthly essays and projects, seasonal recipes and decorating ideas, timeless advice and lots of easy-to-make sewing projects like the excerpt we're sharing today! Indygo Junction is also offering up a Vintage Notions giveaway! (U.S. addresses only this time, please.) Head over to Sew Mama Sew to enter to win Vintage Notions!

Learn more about the Vintage Made Modern Centennial Celebration fabric collection directly from Amy herself, plus find the Summer Purse PDF download below... Hello! My name is Amy and I am the founder of the pattern company Indygo Junction. Today I want to share with you my pattern for a Summer Purse. The pattern appears in my book Vintage Notions: An Inspirational Guide to Needlework, Cooking, Sewing, Fashion and Fun, and is created in my new fabric line Vintage Made Modern Centennial Celebration.

In 2010, I released a book called Vintage Notions: An Inspirational Guide to Needlework, Cooking, Sewing, Fashion and Fun. I am an avid collector of vintage sewing and fashion materials. For years I have scoured flea markets, antique store and online shops for inspiration additions for my vintage library. Z1indygo-0390x It was during this research that I came across publications from the Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences, a correspondence school founded in 1916. I fell in love with the sewing, fashion and entrepreneurial advice from the Institute and discovered a mentor in it’s founder, Mary Brooks Picken. Vintage Notions is a month-by-month compilation of projects and writings from The Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences, bringing their vintage wisdom to modern sewists. Each month in the book features what the Institute called "Magic Patterns." These patterns were published in the institute's Inspiration magazine. Magic patterns are projects that don't need an actual pattern piece. Vintage Notions has 12 magic patterns for everything from aprons, to capes to the purse featured below. I love the idea of these patterns and was inspired by them to create The Magic Pattern Book: Sew 6 Patterns into 36 Different Styles!, which features 36 garment patterns based off six "magic" patterns. zabc1-1024x487 Vintage Notions also features all original artwork from the Woman’s Institute. To honor the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Institute, I designed this line with RJR Fabrics, which features this original artwork as well as imagery from Mary Brooks Picken landmark dictionary, The Language Of Fashion. The Summer Purse uses two prints that came from the dictionary, the actual dictionary text as well as different accessory illustrations I pulled from throughout the book. DSC_0689 The Summer Purse is one of my favorite projects from Vintage Notions. You can download the Summer Purse PDF Pattern here. The full project instructions are in their original form, so on the last page I’ve also included extra tips and techniques to make the vintage instructions easier to follow for modern sewists. Enjoy! Materials:
  • 1 fat quarter for main fabric
  • 1 fat quarter for lining fabric
  • 1/3 yard mid-weight interfacing
  • 1 package of 1/4 inch double fold bias tape
  • 1 button

In today economy there’s only so much you can do to become a better quilter. The correct tools really help! Thank you!

Love sewing supplies to make items to share in my swaps!

Although I’m told a poor craftsman blames her tools, sometimes the right tool enables one to do a better job—to get a greater degree of precision, to do something more quickly in order to move on to the next step and perhaps eventually complete a project. Winning this lovely prize would likely help me in ways I can’t even imagine…although I would love to discover them.

Being a self taught quilter of a lil’ over 4 yrs. I still struggle with technique and the understanding of patterns, color selection, calculating. This giveaway would be such a blessing to win. Thanks for the chance.
